Once in Walking Distance

Here are the Monach Islands (or Heskeir) as seen from Balranald. The individual islands are connected at low tide and, until the 15th Century, could be accessed on foot from Baleshare, five miles away on North Uist. Occupation ceased in 1942, but a new lighthouse has been constructed, the old schoolhouse restored for accommodation and the white beaches, together with the most exposed dune system in the UK, are inviting. Take a look below at the ruined settlement as well as the attractive situation.

  1. The Monach islands are wonderful for a weekend break with the family. Too bad that there aren't places for accommodation there. The beach is great, though.

  2. When researching this article I read that the old school-house had been converted so that some basic accommodation is available. Was this information the result of wishful thinking / plans that were not fulfilled / a future, but unfinished scheme?

  3. That first picture does not show the Monach Islands.
It shows Haskeir (Causamul Island) which is about 10 miles North West of Heisker (Monach Islands)
