Doom comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for judgement and gloom refers to a dull and depressing level of light. Some religious groups are particularly associated with matters of decisions and darkness. The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, which has a presence on Lewis and Harris, tends to be uncompromising and one of its ministers has spoken out against an independent Scotland.
