There are around a thousand pupils at Stornoway's
Nicolson Institute, the largest of the secondary schools in the Western Isles. When they begin the school-year later this month, some £55 million will have been spent on new buildings and facilities. The clock tower remains and serves as a reminder of old times - in fact its founder was born in 1832. The
Stornoway Historical Society has a feature on this educational establishment.
