From Count to Community

Community Buyouts are never straightforward, but the 230 residents of Great Bernera are being offered first refusal terms for their  7000-acre island following the death of Count Robin Mirrlees last June. The full details are in Hebrides News and, undoubtedly, meetings will be held at the Community Centre.

The appeal of a rock-solid investment has its attractions, as does Bosta Beach (below), one of the many appealing features of Great Bernera. An innovative island feature is its bridge (top image) which was constructed in 1953 when it was heralded as the first pre-stressed concrete type in Europe.
