There was a spate of school-building following the passing of the Education Act in 1872 and the building above was constructed at
Gortan, Islay, in the 1880s, on the shore of
Loch Indaal, below. 90 years later it was declared redundant and closed, with generations of local pupils having passed through its doors. New generations are now welcome to use it for
holiday accommodation and many will be attracted by its informative and well-illustrated website. So go to the
