What is today the
Youth Hostel on the Old Scapa Road in
Kirkwall, had been opened in the Second World War for postal and communications staff. However, in 1947 its use changed and part of it became a
hostel for girls from the
outlying Orkney islands attending school in the town. At a special lunch, former residents recalled their time in the accommodation supervised by a 'formidable but kind' matron.
