When a lone kayaker broke a paddle while on the waters north of Skye at the weekend, he required lifeboat attention. His whereabouts brought the rarely-mentioned islands of Crowlin and Longay into the news, on the BBC website. The former had a population as high as 40 in the 19th Century, but has been depopulated virtually ever since. The latter was covered with trees of the Caledonian Forest which gave cover to pirate activity. However, permanent residents were unknown.
