Successive Changes

These images fairly reflect the 'flat grassy island' that is Flotta, in the Orkney group. A sculptured stone slab from the 10th Century was taken from it to the Museum of Scotland. For countless years it was a place of pastoral activities before becoming a naval base in the First World War. It reverted to its rural state before being something of a heavily-manned fortress to guard Scapa Flow in the Second World War. Installations were created and they became used for the next 'era of development' with the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970s. It may have survived and thrived, but original lifestyles have been lost.
