There is a solid-looking stone on the summit of Great Cumbrae, 417' above sea level. It is not to be confused with the allegedly gold-bearing rocks that have recently been found and which are featured on the
BBC website. However, it is known as 'The Glaid Stone' although its name derives from the Scots -
glaid - literally for the common kite or, metaphorically, for a person of a greedy disposition who is prone to prey on others.
