The Neolithic figurine looking at you now may be 5000 years old, but it has had a number of distinct 'lives'. It was carved from whalebone and deposited in a dwelling at Skara Brae, Orkney. Then it came to light during excavations in the 1860s. 70 years later it was given to the Stromness Museum and subsequently 'lost' in the collections.
