This cup was awarded to a football team formed from members of the ship's company of the battleship HMS Dreadnought. Long periods of boredom were features of inaction and, during the First World War, Admiral Jellicoe encouraged the development of sports facilities at Scapa Flow. The Old Red Sandstone of Orkney was the source of some complaints - for the new football ground was considered to be boggy.
