Images to Inspire


This item on the prospective cull of black rats on The Shiants brings together the above image by James Smith, much of whose work was centred on the Western Isles, and those of Jim Richardson, whose photographs are used in this BBC website feature. They were last inhabited in 1901 by 8 people. The islands were once owned by Sir Compton Mackenzie. In 1937 they were sold to author and publisher Nigel Nicholson for £1,500 and have passed through the generations since then.
